There are a handful of Weston prints in the V&A collection, but other than those I haven't seen original prints 'in the flesh' over here since a set of prints made by Cole were exhibited by a London gallery in about 2004.

Make sure you look at "Armco Steel Works, Ohio, 1922". This was a photograph Weston showed to Steiglitz when he visited New York. It foreshadowed Weston's switch from pictorialism to 'straight' photography.

Gah! Everyone's going to see this before I do! I've got train tickets booked to go up there in early October specifically for this visit (and found out about it via William Wegman's facebook page). Really really looking forward to it :) I've not seen Weston prints in a show since 2000 back at Boston's Museum of Fine Art. I don't remember too much besides seeing a pepper, being slightly grossed out by roadkill photos and they had a setup of his darkroom (may or may not be accurate) and I remember seeing the enameled trays and thinking they were cool and seeing the glass measuring jugs/cylinders and thinking those could be deadly.

Hi Graham.

I think it's less about how a photo was made than what happens to it afterwards. A well made print can last several lifetimes while a JPEG on Facebook lasts until your account is closed. In 100 years it will be the prints which have survived.

Best wishes,

Ian.

Ian

A great find and certainly flies the flag for traditional film methods. How long will digital imagery last? Do we back up our hard drives? What is the life of a DVD? Who knows but its certainly proven that traditional prints will stand the test of time. Sorry its been a while but hopefully be in touch soon.

All the best

Hi Ian

Thanks so much for this blog post. I, too, discovered Wynn Bullock's photos and was amazed and inspired. That led to my becoming the webmaster for the Bullock website, and I have revelled in the experience of viewing all his photos - color and black and white.

It's a real priviledge to be associated with photographers at this level. Thanks for being part of the mix.

Well done! I really enjoy the Glimpses series. I know how hard it is to update a website when there are so many other things that could be done. I just updated mine. So I know what an accomplishment this is. Great job.

Ian,

Excellent Idea. I like everything about your new pricing plan. You have made it possible for everyone to enjoy and afford your work. The collectors and galleries can spend the money for the limited editions. Also the person with a budget can afford one of your smaller, digital negative prints. This is a great way to go about it.

It does, Heather. I've made two finished prints form this negative: yours (which as you rightly say is pure platinum), and this one (which one has a dash of palladium as a second coat). I don't have a finished print myself anymore :-(
