William Willis Patents

19th February, 2012

The William Willis Platinum Printing Patents

William Willis, Junior, invented the platinum printing process in the early 1870s.  His company, The Platinotype Company, went on to be the main manufacturer of platinum printing materials worldwide.

Willis took the precaution of patenting his inventions, and the original patents (now out of copyright) are available for viewing in the British Library.  Because the patent books are so old, you are now longer allowed to photocopy the pages – but you are allowed to transcribe them by hand, which I did over several visits in 2010.

I have added my transcriptions of Willis' original platinum printing patents as an appendix to my book, The Platinum Printing Workshop, and you can find them here:

The Willis Patents

There are some errors in the text – sometimes the errors are mine and sometimes I have simply copied an error made by the opriginal patent clerks.
