Glimpses

In 2006 I visited a Rodin exhibition at the Royal Academy in London. The raw, sensuous power of his sculptures affected me deeply. My creative life changed that day.

I like to think that Rodin opened a door for me, and then pushed me through it. On the other side was a part of human experience that I had not touched photographically. I had seen the work of great artists, of course, but I had never tried to make my own.

Some artists have missions – I have questions. A project that chooses me typically arrives as a question, which I try to resolve with photographs. As I make my photographs I learn more about the question, but also I learn about myself.

With Glimpses, I began by looking for the emotion, sensuality and energy I had found in Rodin. Instead I found glimpses of an ideal of the female figure – an ideal that, even after twenty years I still cannot quite define. I keep searching.
